VSS Unity

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo vehicle, VSS Unity, has completed its first glide test at Spaceport America in Southern New Mexico. The successful flight is the first major milestone in readying the spacecraft and spaceport for commercial passengers when Virgin Galactic, the world’s first spaceline, launches from the New Mexico facility.

“Today the Virgin Galactic team has achieved an exciting new milestone in New Mexico ” said Spaceport America’s CEO Dan Hicks. “We are extremely happy and proud of Virgin Galactic not only for their successful glide flight today, but more importantly for how they have integrated into New Mexico and supported the State during the COVID-19 pandemic. Extra precautions were implemented by the teams at Spaceport America and Virgin Galactic to adhere to new guidelines set by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to include social distancing and wearing masks.”

Spaceport America has experienced delays and cancellations due to the global pandemic but continues to provide essential services as set out by the Governor. Spaceport America’s employees are predominately teleworking from home, with limited staff supporting reduced operations for Spaceport customers.
